Estimating Visual Comfort in Stereoscopic Displays Using Electroencephalography: A Proof-of-Concept
نویسندگان
چکیده
With stereoscopic displays, a depth sensation that is too strong could impede visual comfort and result in fatigue or pain. Electroencephalography (EEG) is a technology which records brain activity. We used it to develop a novel braincomputer interface that monitors users’ states in order to reduce visual strain. We present the first proof-of-concept system that discriminates comfortable conditions from uncomfortable ones during stereoscopic vision using EEG. It reacts within 1s to depth variations, achieving 63% accuracy on average and 74% when 7 consecutive variations are measured. This study could lead to adaptive systems that automatically suit stereoscopic displays to users and viewing conditions.

متن کاملVisual Discomfort Estimation for Stereoscopic 3D Contents
Stereoscopic 3D displays are widely applied for home entertainments. However, some viewers complain uncomfortable 3D perception when they watch 3D contents. For generating comfort stereoscopic 3D contents, we proposed three qualitative models for measuring the discomfort. Three experiments for 1) limitation of the viewing angle 2) variance of the viewing angle for the whole scene 3) variance of...
متن کاملEffects of Stereopsis, Collimation, and Head Tracking on Air Refueling Boom Operator Performance
This paper describes an evaluation of the effects of three practical display design variables on air refueling boom operator estimates of distance, ratings of image stability and ratings of visual comfort. Eight combinations of three design variables were tested. Two separate display systems, one collimated and the other direct view, were set up such that stereopsis and head tracking could be t...
متن کاملDepth cues in human visual perception and their realization in 3D displays
Over the last decade, various technologies for visualizing three-dimensional (3D) scenes on displays have been technologically demonstrated and refined, among them such of stereoscopic, multi-view, integral imaging, volumetric, or holographic type. Most of the current approaches utilize the conventional stereoscopic principle. But they all lack of their inherent conflict between vergence and ac...
متن کاملThe visual effects of head-mounted display (HMD) are not distinguishable from those of desk-top computer display
Concerns about potentially harmful effects on the visual system due to the use of head mounted displays (HMDs) in general, and stereoscopic systems in particular, have been raised in the literature. Most of the concerns were based on studies measuring visual function changes following short-term use of HMDs. This study measured functional changes in binocular vision, accommodation, and resoluti...
